Film Gandhi, a 1982 epic biographical film on the life of the Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the father of Nation of India was in news in August 2014. The film was in news because the director of the film Richard Attenborough died on 24 August 2014 at the age of 90. 

The film that won Oscar awards in eight different categories in the 55th Academy Awards depicted Gandhi’s non-violent, non-cooperative independence movement and others against the United Kingdom’s rule in India during the 20th century. 
 
Gandhi was written by John Briley and produced and directed by Richard Attenborough. It stars Ben Kingsley in the titular role. The film was released in India on 30 November 1982 and was followed in other countries like in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1982 and in the United States on 6 December 1982.

The film Gandhi was nominated for eleven categories in 55th Academy Awards in 1883 and was successful in winning eight Academy Awards. The eight categories in which the Academy Awards were given 
• Best Picture • Best Director (Richard Attenborough) 
• Best Original Screenplay (John Briley) 
• Best Film Editing (John Bloom) 
• Best Actor in a Leading Role (Ben Kingsley) 
• Best Art Direction 
• Best Cinematography 
• Best Costume Design - Bhanu Athaiya (she was the first Indian to win Oscar in Academy awards) 

Three other categories in which Gandhi was nominated but didn’t succeed to win the Academy Award were
• Best Makeup (Tom Smith) 
• Best Original Score (Ravi Shankar and George Fenton)
• Best Sound (Gerry Humphreys, Robin O'Donoghue, Jonathan Bates and Simon Kaye)
