What: called-off

India on 18 August 2014 called-off the Foreign Secretary-level bilateral talks with Pakistan. The decision was taken by the Union government after Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit invited Kashmiri separatist Hurriyat leaders in Delhi for a meet.
The high-level talk between the Foreign Secretaries of the two nations was supposed to be held on 25 August 2014 in Islamabad. This Foreign Secretary meet was supposed to be the first meeting in 18 months.
India said Pakistan that chose either the Indo-Pak dialogue or dialogue with the separatist leaders. Foreign Secretary of India, Sujatha Singh on phone said to her Pakistani counterpart that Pakistan’s interference in India’s internal affairs was unacceptable.
Even after seeing the reaction of India, Basit went ahead to meet Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Yasin Malik.
Background
The plan to initiate the high-level talks between the two nations was made after 18-months after Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif accepted an invitation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi on 26 May 2014. During the visit, Modi and Sharif held talks to break the stalemate of bilateral dialogue process.
