The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on 20 August 2014 issued notice to Himachal Pradesh government to give report on depressing state of sex ratio in the State.
The notice was issued to the Chief Secretary, Government of Himachal Pradesh asking for a report within four weeks. The commission raising the question on the serious issue asked about the human rights of the unborn girl child.
The NHRC taking suo motu action and issued notice after media reports claimed that sex ratio in 25 Panchayats of Una district of Himachal Pradesh is alarming as it has gone down to 500 female infants born against 1000 males, in past two years.
Moreover, some Panchayats in the district have much poorer sex ratio than this. This is despite the fact that there is ban on sex determination but still forced abortions are rampant in the State.
