The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHRC) on 19 August 2014 launched one of its biggest ever humanitarian relief and aid operations in Iraq. The operations were launched to help to about 5 lakh internally displaced Iraqis who fled during the two months long violence in Iraq. Aim of the operation is to improve the living conditions of people of the region.
The locally displaced Iraqis will be flown to the Kurdistan capital Erbil that is a home of around 2 lakh people who have taken shelter there. At present, there are eight camps for displaced people in the Duhok and Erbil governorates and another four to six relief camps have been planned.
In the operation, the UNHRC planned an elaborate air, road and sea operation, which would continue for over four days. Under the plan, Boeing 747s will airlift the relief material from Aqaba in Jordan to Erbil in northern Iraq. It will be followed by road convoys from Turkey and Jordan, and sea and land shipments from Dubai via Iran over the next 10 days.
The supplies of the International Humanitarian Partnership will be supported by the contributions from Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
