Former foreign secretary and a member of the Indian Foreign Service AP Venkateshwaran died on 2 September 2014. He was 84.
He is survived by wife Usha Venkateshwaran and daughter Kalpana who is a well-known choreographer settled in the US.

AP Venkateshwaran• Venkateshwaran was born to a Palakkad Iyer family settled in Orissa.
• From 1962 to 1964 he was Deputy Secretary of External affairs, Government of India.
• He became an IFS officer at the age of 22.
• He represented the Indian Government at the United Nations Office in Geneva from May 1980 to August 1982.
• On 1 April 1986, he became State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry. He resigned from the post in January 1987 after he was offended by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for reportedly issuing contradictory statements on his visit to Pakistan.
• He was chairman of the Asia Centre that seeks to promote political, economic, cultural and social exchanges among Asian countries.
