Iraqi forces backed by US air strikes on 31 August 2014 broke the siege of Amerli town of Iraq which was under ISIS militant groups.
The operation to reach Amerli began on 30 August 2014 when an alliance of Iraq government forces, Shia militias and Kurdish Peshmerga began a two-front attack on ISIS positions. The Amerli operation was the first major offensive success for the federal government since the conflict began.
The town was under siege of ISIS group since June 2014. Thousands of Iraqis were trapped by jihadists.
The UK, France and Australia joined the US in dropping humanitarian aid.

Moreover, US military confirmed it had carried out two further air strikes on 31 August 2014. One was near the Mosul Dam and had destroyed an IS armed vehicle. The other was near Amerli, where an IS tank was damaged.
