Japan on 1 September 2014 removed six Indian space and defence entities from the foreign end users list, which will help in defence technology cooperation. This decision was taken during the meeting between PM Narendra Modi and Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe in Tokyo. PM Narendra Modi is on a five-day visit to Japan.
Japan and India completed an agreement for buying the US-2 amphibian aircraft that includes transfer of the aircraft and its technology to India. Both the countries agreed to work together even in exporting the aircraft to third countries which will be the beginning of defence industry in India.
Both the countries also made significant progress in negotiations on civil nuclear cooperation and have agreed to instruct their negotiators to work expeditiously to strengthen strategic partnership. Japan declared that goods and technologies transferred from Japan would not be used for delivery systems for WMD (weapons of mass destruction).
Both the countries decided to expand cooperation in advanced technology, science and technology, people-to-people exchanges and educational exchanges.
