Renowned Telugu filmmaker Sattiraju Lakshminarayana died

Renowned Telugu filmmaker Sattiraju Lakshminarayana nicknamed Bapu died on 31 August 2014 in Chennai. He passed away due to a cardiology-related ailment. He was 80. 

Bapu was also an acclaimed artist, painter, cartoonist and illustrator. Now, he is survived by two sons and a daughter.

About Sattiraju Lakshminarayana alias Bapu
• He was born on 15 December 1933 
• He started his career as a cartoonist for Telugu newspaper Andhra Patrika
• Bapu begun his film career as a director in 1967 with Sakshi, the film that was screened at the international film festival at Tashkent in 1968
• His film Seeta Kalyanam was screened at the BFI London Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, San Reno and Denver International Film Festivals in 1978, and is part of the course at the British Film Institute
• He directed his last film Sri Rama Rajyam in 2011 and had a special screening at International Film Festival of India on 18 November 2011
• He was an ardent devotee of Lord Ram and that’s why most of his stories were inspired from Ramayana and some of those films were Sampoorna Ramayanam, Ramanjeneya Yuddham and Seetha Kalyanam
• He also directed few Hindi and Tamil language. His Hindi films included Ham Paanch and Seeta Swayamvar, Woh Saat Din and Mera Dharam
• As a filmmaker, he directed about 50 films in his career
• His film of 1981, Tyagayya was showcased at the Indian Panorama of International Film Festival of India in 1982
• He has appeared in the Doordarshan Documentary Eminent Cartoonists of India.
• He gained international recognition through his art works viz., Bapu Bomma, The Navarasas, and the Indian Dances etc., which were held at the National Film Theatre, London, in 1978 and at the innumerable Telugu Conferences in the United States.
• He has worked as a graphic artist for J Walter Thomson, Efficient Publicities and FD Stewarts, Chennai
• In 1960's he served as art Consultant for Ford Foundation sponsored The Southern Language Book Trust

Awards and Honours conferred on Bapu

• In 2013, he won the Padma Shri award
• He was the winner of five Nandi Award of Andhra Pradesh government 
• Apart from this, Bapu received several coveted honours like two National Film Awards, two Filmfare Awards South, and a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South for the year 2012
a) National Film Awards were given for 
• Best Feature Film in Telugu – Mutyala Muggu 
• Best Feature Film in Telugu – Mister Pellam
b) Filmfare Awards South were given as
• Best Director Award (Telugu) – Seeta Kalyanam (1976)
• Best Director Award (Telugu) – Vamsa Vruksham (1980) 
• Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South - (2012)

Some National honours were
• Life Time Achievement Award from Indian Institute of Cartoonists – 2001
• President of India Rashtrapati Award from the Academy of Fine Arts, Tirupati
