Union Government relaxed onion import norms

Union Government on 1 September 2014 relaxed the import norms of Onion by allowing fumigation in India. The fumigation has been allowed up to 30 November 2014. The norms were relaxed in light of public concern over high prices of onion in the market.
According to the Union Ministry of Agriculture release, consignments of imported onions that arrive on Indian ports without fumigation and endorsement will be fumigated in the country by the importer through an accredited treatment provider. Then the consignments will be inspected thoroughly by quarantine officials and released only if they are found free from pests and diseases of concern to India.
The release also stated that the consignments of onions for consumption will not be subjected to the four times penal fees on account of non-compliance of conditions of import.

Reason for Fumigation

Fumigation is a method performed to get rid of pests. The technique used in the process of fumigation either poisons or suffocates the pests.
